rosetta stone the granite guild
Tip 3: Can you visit the factory and choose your own slab?
Quite typically there are four answers that you will get when asking this question to granite companies: 1) we don't have a factory 2) our factory is overseas 3) we only buy pre cut lengths so there aren't any slabs to choose from 4) yes please do but call in advance so we can make arrangements for you.
'We don't have a factory'
If the answer you get back is 'we don't have a factory' it usually means that they are merely taking your order and getting someone else to undertake the manufacturing. The two issues with this is that you will be paying more for the granite as the middle men need to make a profit and you may also have an issue if anything goes wrong as one will blame the other while you are stuck in the middle.
'Our factory is based overseas'
Once again this answer is similar to the last only if and when things go wrong you have to deal with a manufacturer who is not based in the UK and is not subject to consumer legislation's and laws. With this option it is like rolling a dice and hoping that all works out well for you.
'We only buy pre cut lengths'
Companies that only buy pre cut lengths will be quite hesitant to show you their factory because they probably don't have one. They normally use hand held tools to complete cutting and polishing. Needless to say the standard of finish is normally not as good as when completed on a proper saw or polishing machine. Another issue to consider is that pre cut lengths are normally the off cuts from other companies or quarries and the colour, pattern, contrast and thickness of each section vary. This may not be too much of a problem if you just require two lengths that run parallel in a kitchen such as a galley style, but could be disastrous if you have a join such as an 'L' shaped kitchen as the difference of thickness will become apparent at the join.
'Yes we have our own factory and you can choose your slab'
If the answer is yes to both having a factory and choosing a slab then this is the type of company you should be dealing with. Seeing the types of machines that a company has may not be the most exciting way of spending an afternoon but it could help you sleep easier at night knowing that your order is with a proper company. Choosing a slab to work from is similar to having a suit made to measure as opposed to buying one off the peg; you have the choice of colour, contrast and with some stones, pattern.
