Rosetta Stone |
| |
The Rosetta Stone was created in 196 BC and discovered by a French soldier Jean-Francois Champollion in 1822 in Egypt. The stone measures 114 cm high, 72 cm wide and nearly 28 cm thick. The discovery of the stone was accidental but hugely important as it enabled scholars to decipher the old Egyptian hieroglyphics. |
Hieroglyphics is an ancient form of Egyptian text, it uses symbols or pictures to denote words that up until this point were undecipherable. The stone is important as it has the same text repeated in 3 different languages; hieroglyphics, demonic (another ancient Egyptian language) and classical Greek.
|
As Greek was a known language it was relatively easy to translate the other two languages and therefore provide a frame of reference for future translations. |
The Rosetta Stone is symbolic of new levels of understanding and cooperation. At The Granite Guild we hope to achieve the same but instead of translating an ancient language we hope to bring independent granite companies together to provide its customers with a better service. |
